Abu Dhabi Lease to Own: 2026 Costs, Darb Tolls & Police Rules

Same contract as in Dubai, but the tolls, parking, policing and distances around it are different, and most of them changed in the past year.

How is leasing to own in Abu Dhabi different from Dubai?

Living in Abu Dhabi does not change the lease. We sign the same lease-to-own contract we sign in Dubai: we buy the car, it stays registered to the company for the whole term, and it passes to you after the last payment. You need two documents, an Emirates ID and a UAE driving licence, and a decision usually comes within 24 hours. On our calculator, a 2024 Nissan Patrol at AED 185,000 over 24 months is from AED 9,523 a month after a 20% down payment, plus a separate annual payment from AED 9,250 for insurance and registration.

What changes is the cost around the payment. Since September 2025, Darb tolls are AED 4 a crossing with no daily or monthly cap, and two gates that opened in May 2026 charge around the clock. Mawaqif parking is AED 2 an hour or AED 15 a day, the police allow no margin over the posted limit, and distances, inside the emirate and on the run to Dubai, use up a mileage allowance quickly. For a Khalifa City commuter without office parking, that Patrol comes to from about AED 10,800 a month before fuel and fines.

This guide works through each of those, with figures as of October 2026 from Q Mobility, which runs Darb and Mawaqif, and from Abu Dhabi Police. For how lease-to-own works in general, read our Lease-to-Own guide. For the cars and mileage packages in the capital, see our Abu Dhabi page.

What does not change. The rate, the terms and the paperwork. We do not ask for a salary certificate, bank statements, a salary transfer or an AECB score. Banks ask for those; we do not.

What does change. Because the car is registered with the RTA in Dubai, it carries Dubai plates. That is entirely normal: registration follows the owner, a UAE licence is valid in every emirate, and Dubai-plated cars are an everyday sight in the capital. It has three practical consequences:

  • Darb, the Abu Dhabi toll system, needs every car registered, and cars from outside the emirate also need a prepaid wallet.
  • Fines and the Darb registration pass through us, because we are the registered owner.
  • Anything that needs the owner in person, such as releasing an impounded car, takes longer.

How much does it cost to lease to own a car in Abu Dhabi?

Every figure here comes from the calculator on our site, as of October 2026, on plans with no final payment.

How a plan is built. The rate is a flat 24% a year on the amount left after the down payment, with no compounding. When there is a down payment, it counts as payment number one, so a 24-month plan has 23 monthly payments after it. Separately, at the start of each contract year, comes the annual payment for comprehensive insurance, RTA registration and fees: 5% of the car's price, minimum AED 8,000. It is never part of the monthly payment. GPS is fitted free. Terms are 12, 24 and 36 months: zero down is available on 12- and 24-month plans, 36 months on selected cars, and some cars are offered up to 24 months only.

Example 1: Nissan Patrol 2024, AED 185,000, 24 months. This car is offered on 12- and 24-month plans.

  • Zero down: from AED 11,408 a month for 24 months. On day one you pay the first monthly payment plus the annual payment, from AED 20,658. Total over the contract: from AED 292,292.
  • 20% down: payment one is from AED 37,000, then from AED 9,523 a month for 23 months. Day one: from AED 46,250. Total: from AED 274,529.

Keeping AED 25,592 more in hand on day one costs AED 17,763 more over two years. That is the honest price of zero down, and whether it is worth paying depends on what that cash would otherwise do.

Example 2: Range Rover Sport 2023, AED 315,000, 20% down.

  • 24 months: from AED 63,000 down, then from AED 16,216 a month for 23 months. Total: from AED 467,468.
  • 36 months: from AED 63,000 down, then from AED 12,384 a month for 35 months. Total: from AED 543,690.

Day one is from AED 78,750 on both plans. The longer term takes AED 3,832 off the monthly payment but adds AED 76,222 to the total. Of that, AED 15,750 is a third year of insurance and registration, and the rest is the rate running for an extra year. A longer term is a cash-flow choice, not a saving.

The all-in monthly figure in Abu Dhabi. Take the Patrol at 20% down, driven by someone commuting from Khalifa City to the island with no office parking:

  • Payment: from AED 9,523.
  • Annual payment spread over twelve months: from about AED 771.
  • Darb, one bridge gate each way at peak on 22 working days: about AED 176.
  • Mawaqif, a standard bay all day on 22 working days: about AED 330.

That is from about AED 10,800 a month before fuel and fines, and it is the figure to compare between offers, not the payment alone. Our cost analysis page and calculator run the same sums for any car in the fleet.

What should you sort out in your first week on Dubai plates?

Darb registration and wallet. Every vehicle that passes through a Darb gate must be registered on the system. Cars registered outside Abu Dhabi also need enough balance in the vehicle's wallet, because tolls are deducted automatically at each crossing. Registration costs AED 100 per vehicle: AED 50 is the fee and AED 50 is credited to the wallet.

The penalties make this a first-week job:

  • A car that crosses without being registered gets 10 working days to register. After that, the fine is AED 100, then AED 200, then AED 400 on successive days.
  • A registered car without enough balance gets five working days to top up. After that, an AED 50 fine applies, on top of the toll itself.

Tell us before your first trip into Abu Dhabi. Q Mobility only lets the legal owner register a vehicle, and the owner on the registration card is Drive Your Dream, so contact us before your first trip to get the car registered, and ask how its wallet is topped up. Tolls and any Darb fines are yours, as Salik is in Dubai, where we fit the tag and you keep it topped up. The two systems are separate: a Salik balance does nothing at a Darb gate, and a Darb balance does nothing at a Salik gate.

Resident parking permit. If you live in a Mawaqif area, the resident permit for an expatriate costs AED 800 a year (AED 400 for six months) for the first car and AED 1,200 a year (AED 600 for six months) for a second, applied for through the Darb app or TAMM. When the car is not in your name, Q Mobility lists a vehicle lease agreement among the documents, so keep a copy of ours to hand. Its FAQ does not say how it treats a car registered in another emirate, so check before relying on street parking.

Fines. Camera fines are recorded against the car, which means against us as the registered owner. We forward them, and paying them is your responsibility. Forwarding takes time, and in Abu Dhabi that can cost you part of the early-payment discount covered below, so check the plate yourself once a month.

How much are Darb tolls in 2026, and what changed?

Darb rules changed twice between September 2025 and May 2026, and many cost figures still repeated online predate both changes.

The four bridge gates. Sheikh Khalifa Bridge, Sheikh Zayed Bridge, Al Maqta Bridge and Musaffah Bridge charge AED 4 per crossing in peak hours: 7am to 9am and 3pm to 7pm, Monday to Saturday. Outside those hours, and all day on Sundays and public holidays, they are free.

What changed on 1 September 2025. The evening peak was extended from 5–7pm to 3–7pm. More importantly, the caps went. There used to be a daily maximum of AED 16 and monthly maximums of AED 200 for a first car, AED 150 for a second and AED 100 for a third. All of them were abolished, so every crossing is now charged.

What changed on 4 May 2026. Two new gates opened, and they follow a different rule: AED 4 per crossing, 24 hours a day, seven days a week, public holidays included. One is at Ghantoot on Sheikh Maktoum bin Rashid Street, the E11, near the Dubai border. The other is Al Qurm, on Wahat Al Karama Street at the entry and exit of Sheikh Zayed Street. The authority names free alternatives: Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Street, the E311, instead of Ghantoot, and Sheikh Rashid bin Saeed Street or Arabian Gulf Street instead of Al Qurm.

What it costs in practice:

  • Living in Khalifa City or on Yas and working on the island: one bridge gate each way inside peak hours is AED 8 a day, about AED 176 a month over 22 working days.
  • Living in Dubai with an office on the island, driving three days a week on the E11: Ghantoot both ways plus a bridge gate both ways at peak is AED 16 a day, about AED 2,200 a year over 46 working weeks. Taking the E311 removes the Ghantoot half.
  • The same trip five days a week: AED 16 a day over 230 working days is AED 3,680 a year, with no cap to stop it.

None of this is large next to a car payment, but it is now uncapped and predictable, so it belongs in the monthly budget.

What does parking cost in Abu Dhabi, and where did paid zones spread in 2026?

The tariff. Mawaqif charges from 8am to midnight, Monday to Saturday, and is free on Sundays and public holidays. A standard bay costs AED 2 an hour or AED 15 for the whole day. A premium bay costs AED 3 an hour, with a four-hour maximum. Resident bays are reserved for permit holders from 9pm to 8am. Multi-storey car parks cost AED 2 an hour or AED 15 a day.

Where paid parking arrived this year. On 12 January 2026, Musaffah sectors M1, M2, M3, M4 and M24 became paid: 4,680 bays at AED 2 an hour. On 6 May 2026, the commercial sectors ME9 and ME12 in Mohamed bin Zayed City followed: 10,205 bays at the same rate. On 18 May 2026 a further 3,921 bays in Musaffah became paid at the same rate. Payment is through the Darb or TAMM apps, SMS or the machines.

What is coming. New zone-coded signs went up in September 2026. Q Mobility says they belong to a future move to location-based tariffs and that nothing changes yet. Budget on today's rates, but do not assume they are permanent.

Free Flow parking. At multi-storey and selected private car parks, Abu Dhabi is introducing number-plate recognition: the charge starts when you drive in and is taken from the car's Darb wallet when you leave. That is one more reason to keep the wallet on a Dubai-plated car funded.

The budget line. A full working day in a standard bay is AED 15, about AED 330 a month over 22 days. If your office provides parking, that line is zero. If it does not, put it next to the payment, not after it.

How strict are Abu Dhabi Police on speed and red lights?

Zero tolerance. Habits formed elsewhere do not survive here. Abu Dhabi has run a zero-tolerance speed system since 2018. The posted limit is the legal limit: 101 km/h on a 100 km/h road is a violation. Speeding fines run from AED 300 to AED 3,000.

Limits that came down in 2026. If you learned the roads a year ago, some numbers are now wrong:

  • From 9 February 2026, the E22 Abu Dhabi–Al Ain road between the Al Nahda and Bani Yas interchanges went from 160 to 140 km/h, and Bani Yas Interchange to the Bridge complex went from 140 to 120 km/h.
  • From the same date, Al Rawdah Road, the E30, went from 120 to 100 km/h.
  • From 14 September 2026, the E311 between the At Turoush and Tawi Al Qaymah junctions and the Al Khayr Street interchange went from 120 to 100 km/h in both directions. That stretch is part of the free route around the Ghantoot gate, so the toll you save comes with a slower section.

Red lights and impounds. Under Abu Dhabi Law No. 5 of 2020, jumping a red light means an AED 1,000 fine, 12 black points, a 30-day impound, a six-month licence suspension and an AED 50,000 fee to release the car. Reckless driving means an AED 2,000 fine, 23 points and a 60-day impound. A vehicle whose unpaid fines exceed AED 7,000 can be impounded until they are settled.

Why this is harder on a leased car. Impound procedures, including the smart impound that lets a car stay at home under electronic monitoring for AED 15 a day, need the vehicle owner to attend with an Emirates ID or appoint someone by power of attorney. The owner is us, so expect delay. Under our agreement, traffic penalties, the release fee included, belong to the driver.

Discounts worth using. Abu Dhabi Police take 35% off fines paid within 60 days of the violation, and 25% off fines paid after that but within a year. Severe violations are excluded. You pay through the Abu Dhabi Police website or TAMM, and instalment plans are available through partner banks including FAB, ADCB, ADIB and Mashreq. Wait for a forwarded notice and part of the 60 days may already be gone.

Black points. Under the federal traffic law in force since 29 March 2025, 24 points within 12 months suspends your licence. Our fines guide covers points, fine transfers and the Dubai side in full.

What do you do after an accident in Abu Dhabi?

Minor collision, nobody hurt. Move the cars to a safe place first. In Abu Dhabi, leaving them on the road without justification after a minor accident costs AED 1,000 and 6 traffic points. Then report it through the Saaed app: your location and the accident details, a copy of the registration card and your licence, and photos of the damage to both cars. The report comes back to you on WhatsApp.

Anyone injured, or a serious crash. Call 999 and wait for the police.

Then call us. We run the claim under the comprehensive policy paid for by the annual payment. Take more photos than you think you need, and do not settle privately at the roadside, because the insurer works from the report.

What the policy will not cover. It is an ordinary UAE comprehensive motor policy, so it excludes what those policies exclude. A car damaged off-road, on a circuit or outside the country is not an insurance event; it is an invoice. That is the reason for the rules further down this page. For the full step-by-step, including repairs and total loss, see our accident guide.

How many kilometres do you need for the Dubai–Abu Dhabi commute?

Every lease includes 25,000 km a year, about 2,080 km a month. Packages of 35,000 and 50,000 km a year are available, and excess is charged at AED 10 per kilometre. Our Abu Dhabi page covers commuting inside the emirate. Here is the arithmetic for the trip that breaks most allowances.

Five days a week between the cities. Dubai to Abu Dhabi is about 140 km each way. Five return trips a week over 230 working days is about 64,400 km a year, before you drive anywhere else. Even the 50,000 km package leaves 14,400 km over, and at AED 10 a kilometre that is AED 144,000 a year in excess charges. No package makes that pattern work on our lease, and we would rather say so here than at the end of year one.

The train changes the maths. Etihad Rail's Dubai–Abu Dhabi passenger service started on 30 September 2026. Trains run between Al Yalayis station in Dubai, connected to the Metro Red Line by a 400-metre walkway, and Mohamed bin Zayed City station in Abu Dhabi, in about 64 minutes. There are ten trains a day, five in each direction. Fares start from AED 39 in Comfort when booked online (AED 60 at the station machines) and from AED 109 in Premium.

A mixed week: drive three days, take the train two.

  • Driving: 280 km × 3 days × 46 weeks is about 38,600 km.
  • Local driving at both ends: allow about 6,000 km.
  • Total: about 44,600 km a year, inside the 50,000 km package.
  • Train: two return days a week in Comfort booked online, 4 × AED 39 × 46 weeks, is about AED 7,176 a year.

Both stations sit on the edge of their cities, so the first and last kilometres still need a car, a taxi or the metro, and five departures each way means checking the timetable against your hours first.

The rule. Count your real weekly kilometres before you choose the car and the package. Buying the allowance up front costs less per kilometre than paying excess, and the GPS fitted to every car records the mileage all year, so neither side is guessing. Our mileage guide explains packages, including upgrading mid-term.

Can you lease a car you found at an Abu Dhabi dealer?

Yes, if it meets the rules. If the car you want is at a dealer in Musaffah or with a private seller in Khalifa City, our Bring Your Own programme can buy it and lease it to you. The rules as of October 2026: listed from AED 150,000 (a special offer since 1 October 2026), model year 2023 or newer, from 20% down, 12, 24 or 36 months, and no final payment. The price is the listing plus 5% VAT, because we buy on the company. Chinese brands and fully electric cars are not eligible; hybrids are fine.

The car goes through our compliance check, covering technical condition and a legal check, before we agree to buy it. From link to keys, the check included, usually takes 5 to 7 business days.

Example: a 2024 SUV listed at AED 280,000. That is well above the AED 150,000 Bring Your Own threshold, and with VAT the basis becomes AED 294,000. At 20% down, with no final payment:

  • 36 months: from AED 58,800 down, then from AED 11,558 a month for 35 months. Day one: from AED 73,500. Total: from AED 507,430.
  • 24 months: from AED 58,800 down, then from AED 15,135 a month for 23 months. Day one: from AED 73,500. Total: from AED 436,305.

In both cases the car is yours after the last monthly payment.

The entry point, for scale. A car listed at AED 150,000 works out at from AED 8,108 a month over 24 months at 20% down, with from AED 39,500 on day one and no final payment. Below an AED 150,000 listing, choose from the fleet instead.

What can you not do with a leased car in Abu Dhabi?

Our rules article explains each restriction. Here they are as they come up in Abu Dhabi.

Desert and off-road driving: not permitted. That includes Liwa and every sand route in Al Dhafra. A normal comprehensive policy does not cover off-road use, so a car damaged there is uninsured.

Track days at Yas Marina Circuit, or any timed event: not permitted. Circuit use is excluded by virtually every motor policy, and if you are being timed, you are racing. If you want laps, book a session where the car is provided.

Leaving the UAE: not permitted. That covers the crossings from Al Ain into Oman and Ghuwaifat into Saudi Arabia. An asset outside the jurisdiction is outside the courts, and banks restrict cross-border travel on the cars they finance for the same reason. For a road trip across a border, use a car you own outright or a rental built for it.

Towing: allowed, with conditions. A boat, jet ski or caravan is fine if you hold the right licence category and any permit the load needs. Tell us in advance, because the insurance may cost extra.

How does the process work if you live in Abu Dhabi?

Apply. Online or on WhatsApp, with two documents: an Emirates ID and a UAE driving licence. A decision usually comes within 24 hours, a fleet car follows in 1 to 3 business days, and we deliver across the emirate.

See the car. We have no office or showroom in Abu Dhabi, and our registered office in Al Karama, Dubai, is a licence address, not a place to view cars. Viewings and test drives are by appointment, usually at our partner workshop Easy Care in Dubai. If you would rather see the car in the capital, say so when you book and we will confirm what is possible for that car and date.

Pay. Monthly payments fall on the 1st or the 15th, chosen at signing, by post-dated cheques or a standing order. Know the downside before you sign: after a seven-day grace period, an unpaid instalment means the car is immobilised remotely through its GPS until the balance is settled. We contact you first, but it does happen.

Each year. We renew the insurance and registration ourselves through the annual payment, so you do not deal with the RTA. Routine servicing, fuel, Salik, Darb, parking and fines stay with you.

At the end, or earlier. You can buy the car out at any time with no early-buyout penalty, and it transfers to your name once the contract is paid in full. From then on, the Darb account and parking permit can sit with you directly, because you are the owner.

Who should not lease to own from us in Abu Dhabi?

We would rather lose the deal here than in month seven.

Five-day drivers between Dubai and Abu Dhabi. The mileage arithmetic above does not work on any package we offer. Mix in the train, or choose a way of owning a car that has no kilometre limit.

Anyone planning Oman or Saudi road trips, desert weekends or track days in the car they lease. None of those is permitted, and that will not change mid-contract.

Small budgets. Our plans are built around payments from roughly AED 7,000 to AED 10,000 a month and up, before tolls, parking and the annual payment. If your all-in ceiling is well below that, a less expensive car bought outright or financed through a bank will usually suit you better.

Settled salaried employees who qualify at a bank. If you already have an AECB history, a salary account with an Abu Dhabi bank and the 20% minimum down payment the Central Bank requires for auto loans, a bank loan will often cost less over the term than a flat 24% lease. Compare honestly; our lease-versus-bank-loan guide shows how. What we offer is speed, two documents and no salary transfer, not the lowest rate.

Everyone else is who the product was built for: new arrivals, the self-employed, contract staff whose income a bank scoring model dislikes, and people who do not want their salary tied to one bank.

Available to lease right now

Live prices from our fleet. The monthly figure covers the vehicle; insurance, RTA registration and admin come as one annual renewal fee.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I lease to own a car in Abu Dhabi from a company based in Dubai?

Yes. The contract is the same as in Dubai: we buy the car, it stays registered to us for the term and passes to you after the last payment. It carries Dubai plates, which is normal, because registration follows the owner and a UAE licence is valid in every emirate. You need only an Emirates ID and a UAE driving licence, with no salary certificate or AECB check, and a decision usually comes within 24 hours.

How much does it cost to lease to own a car in Abu Dhabi?

It depends on the car, the term and the down payment. On our calculator, a 2024 Nissan Patrol at AED 185,000 over 24 months is from AED 9,523 a month after 20% down, plus an annual payment from AED 9,250 for insurance and registration. Add Darb tolls and Mawaqif parking, and a Khalifa City commuter without office parking pays from about AED 10,800 a month before fuel and fines.

Do I need a Darb account for a leased car with Dubai plates?

Yes. Cars registered outside Abu Dhabi must be registered on Darb and keep enough balance in the vehicle's wallet; registration costs AED 100, of which AED 50 is credited as balance. Only the legal owner can register a vehicle, so contact us before your first trip into Abu Dhabi to get the car registered, and ask how its wallet is topped up. The tolls and any Darb fines are yours, as with Salik in Dubai.

What are the Darb toll timings and charges in 2026?

As of October 2026, the four bridge gates (Sheikh Khalifa, Sheikh Zayed, Al Maqta and Musaffah) charge AED 4 per crossing from 7am to 9am and 3pm to 7pm, Monday to Saturday, and are free on Sundays and public holidays. The daily and monthly caps were abolished on 1 September 2025. Since 4 May 2026, the Ghantoot gate on the E11 and the Al Qurm gate charge AED 4 per crossing 24 hours a day, every day.

Is there a speed buffer on Abu Dhabi roads?

No. Abu Dhabi has used zero tolerance since 2018, so 101 km/h on a 100 km/h road is a violation, with fines from AED 300 to AED 3,000. Several limits came down in 2026, including parts of the E22 and E30 from 9 February and a stretch of the E311 from 120 to 100 km/h from 14 September.

Can I lease to own a car in Abu Dhabi without a down payment?

Yes, on 12- and 24-month plans, and on 36 months for selected cars. You still pay something on day one: the first monthly payment plus the annual payment. On a 2024 Nissan Patrol at AED 185,000 over 24 months, that is from AED 20,658 on day one, then from AED 11,408 a month for the remaining 23 months. Market cars through Bring Your Own, listed from AED 150,000, need from 20% down and have no final payment.

How many kilometres do I need if I commute between Dubai and Abu Dhabi?

Driving five days a week is about 64,400 km a year at roughly 140 km each way, which is over even our 50,000 km package; the excess would cost AED 144,000 a year at AED 10 a kilometre. Driving three days and taking Etihad Rail on the other two comes to about 44,600 km a year including local driving, which fits the 50,000 km package. Train fares for those two days are about AED 7,176 a year in Comfort, booked online.

What happens if a leased car is impounded in Abu Dhabi?

Release procedures, including the AED 15-a-day smart impound at home, need the vehicle owner to attend with an Emirates ID or appoint someone by power of attorney. On a leased car the owner is us, so expect delay, and under our agreement traffic penalties, the release fee included, belong to the driver. A red light alone means an AED 1,000 fine, 12 black points, a 30-day impound, a six-month licence suspension and an AED 50,000 release fee.

Can I drive a leased car from Abu Dhabi or Al Ain into Oman?

No. Leaving the UAE is not permitted on our lease, whether through the Al Ain crossings into Oman or Ghuwaifat into Saudi Arabia. A car outside the jurisdiction is outside the courts, which is also why banks restrict cross-border travel on the cars they finance. For a border trip, use a car you own outright or a rental built for it.

What does the monthly payment cover, and what do I pay separately?

The monthly payment covers the car, our administration and GPS tracking, which is fitted at no extra charge. Comprehensive insurance, RTA registration and fees come as a separate annual payment of 5% of the car's price, minimum AED 8,000. Fuel, Salik, Darb tolls, Mawaqif parking, traffic fines, routine servicing and any excess kilometres are yours.

Do you have an office in Abu Dhabi?

No. We are based in Dubai, and our registered office in Al Karama is a licence address, not a showroom. You apply online or on WhatsApp, and viewings and test drives are by appointment, usually at our partner workshop Easy Care in Dubai. If you would rather see the car in Abu Dhabi, ask when you book and we will confirm what is possible for that car and date.
