Deep Tread, Illegal Tyre: The Two Things UAE Heat Counts on a Calendar

Two components that expire by date rather than by distance — and the heat sets the pace for both.

A tyre can fail its test with the tread almost new

Most drivers check tyres the way they were taught to: look at the tread, press a coin into the groove, decide. In the UAE that is only half the test.

The RTA will not pass a vehicle on a tyre more than five years old from its date of manufacture, regardless of how much rubber is left. It is an additional ground for rejection, not a replacement for the others — tread below 1.6 mm, cuts, bulges and uneven wear still fail exactly as they always did.

So a car can arrive at inspection with tyres that look barely used and be turned away. It happens most often to low-mileage cars, which is precisely the profile of a second car, a weekend car, or anything that spent a year parked while its owner was abroad.

How to read a tyre’s age in five seconds

Every tyre carries a DOT code on the sidewall, and the last four digits are the date of manufacture: week, then year. 3223 means week 32 of 2023.

Two details that catch people out.

The full code is only mandatory on one sidewall. If you crouch down and find a DOT code with no date, you are looking at the inner face — check the other side before concluding anything.

And a tyre starts ageing at the factory, not at fitting. A tyre that sat in a warehouse for eighteen months has already spent eighteen months of its five years. This is the argument for reading the date at the point of purchase rather than discovering it at your next inspection: you are entitled to know what you are being sold, and a good fitter will show you without being asked.

Rubber ages whether you drive on it or not

The five-year rule is not bureaucratic caution. NHTSA states the mechanism plainly: ageing proceeds whether the tyre is driven or parked — and that explicitly includes the spare in the boot, which is the tyre most likely to be very old and most likely to be needed in an emergency.

What degrades is not the tread. It is thermo-oxidation of the rubber compound: a chemical process that stiffens the material and weakens the bond between the belts and the carcass. Tread depth measures how much rubber is left. It says nothing about whether that rubber has gone brittle.

NHTSA calibrated its oven-ageing test against real tyres pulled from service in Phoenix, Arizona — a climate chosen for the obvious reason. Five weeks at 65 °C gives the material the properties of a tyre with roughly four years of average service life in those conditions. The UAE is not Phoenix, but it is not Manchester either.

Pressure: measure cold, and do not wait for the light

Three things worth getting right, none of which take longer than the fuel stop you are already making.

Measure cold. Pressure moves roughly 1 psi for every 5.5 °C, so a tyre checked after half an hour on Sheikh Zayed Road will read several psi high and you will let air out of a tyre that was correct. Morning, before driving.

The number is on the door pillar, not the tyre. The figure moulded into the sidewall is the tyre’s maximum, not its working pressure. The placard in the driver’s door aperture is what the car was engineered around.

The TPMS light is not an early warning. Under FMVSS 138 it illuminates at 25% under-inflation. By then you are well past the point where handling, braking distance and heat build-up have started to change. The light tells you something is already wrong, not that something is developing.

Every extra 8 °C halves a battery’s life

The second component on the calendar, and the one where the Gulf climate is most brutal.

Battery University’s data is stark. A battery rated for 10 years at 25 °C manages about 5 years at 33 °C, and roughly 30 months at 41 °C. Field data from the field agrees with the laboratory: average service life runs about 59 months in the cool north of the United States against 47 in the hot south — and the hot south of the US is temperate compared with a Dubai August.

The mechanism is two irreversible processes running in parallel. Water evaporates out of the electrolyte, and the positive grids corrode. Neither is recoverable. Capacity lost to heat does not come back with charging — which is why the battery that "just needs a good charge" so often fails again within weeks.

A detail that tells you how much of this is purely thermal: on cars where the manufacturer mounts the battery in the boot rather than under the bonnet, it lasts noticeably longer. Same battery, same electrical load, cooler location.

It dies in winter. It was killed in summer

In temperate countries batteries fail on the first cold morning, and everyone blames the cold. The cold is not what killed it.

What cold does is increase the current required to crank the engine while reducing what the battery can deliver. It does not damage the battery; it exposes damage the summer already did. A battery with 60% of its original capacity works fine in September and fails in January.

The UAE has no winter in that sense, so the reveal looks different here. It does not fail on a cold morning — it fails when you come back from three weeks away, or it sags under air-conditioning load in traffic and the electronics start behaving strangely before anything else gives a clue.

The test that actually answers the question

A voltmeter reads 12.6 volts on a healthy battery. It also reads 12.6 volts on a battery with half its capacity gone, because voltage tells you the state of charge, not the state of health. This is why so many batteries are pronounced fine a fortnight before they strand someone.

The measurement that answers the question is a load test — or a conductance test, which most workshops now use and which takes under a minute. It tells you what the battery can actually deliver under demand.

The useful part is when to do it: April, not July. Before the season that does the damage, not on a hard shoulder in the middle of it. Add it to the same visit as the pre-summer cooling-system check and it costs you nothing extra in time.

Family cars accumulate years faster than kilometres, which is exactly the pattern the five-year rule catches. On a DYD lease tyres, inspection and the annual renewal are tracked by us.

What to do this week

Three things, none of which require an appointment.

Read the DOT code on all four tyres and the spare. Last four digits. If any of them is more than four years old, you are planning a replacement rather than reacting to a failed inspection.

Check pressures cold against the door placard, not the sidewall.

Book a load test if the battery is more than two years old and you have not had one. In this climate two years is not new.

None of this is exotic maintenance. It is the ordinary list, run against a calendar instead of an odometer — because in the Gulf the calendar is what is actually doing the damage.
